Systems Administration
System Administration consists of several main functions—maintaining
the day-to-day operation of a system, troubleshooting and problem resolution,
and planning and designing for future applications and growth. It includes
working at the desktop level as well as the server level.
Network Administration
Network Administration consists of maintaining the health of a network's
infrastructure. This includes ensuring that computing resources can communicate
with each other, both locally and across the country. It encompasses several
main components: the physical wiring, network protocols (TCP/IP), and
network hardware (routers, switches).
Beyond the System and Network
Not all situations fit strictly within the realm of either systems or
network administration, since the infrastructure itself is driven by applications.
We can ensure that the system is properly configured to work with various
applications. A frequent example is configuring disk space for use with
databases. Databases tend to have unique read and write patterns which
can be optimized based on how physical disks, disk controllers or RAID
devices are configured. Additionally, you may encounter application problems
which lie outside of the realm of our expertise. Because we maintain professional
relationships with experts in many fields (e.g. software development,
database experts), we may be able to find a specialist or coordinate with
them as needed.
